Chapter Six

For an initial moment, Tracy thought she had ruined it, that Thomas was going to push her away. Instead, he had growled in a way that made his chest vibrate under her hands, and then he was kissing her back. Whoa, she had certainly unleashed something in him. The normally placid, collected man had been holding back. And she liked it.

A lot.

She should have taken the reins months ago and kissed him, but the fear of rejection was always there. This time, no rejection. Just complete acceptance.

Thomas broke the kiss, resting his forehead against hers. It shouldn’t have worked with the awkward angle, but this simple gesture somehow made her feel safe, cared for, loved.

“I’m such a coward.”

Tracy blinked.

“Why do you say that?”

“Because it takes a stupid piece of greenery to get the courage to kiss you.”

Tracy smiled and kissed him.

“Me too… you didn’t need to worry… and don’t you dare stop now.”

“I don’t want to.” Thomas’s arms tightened around her. “I just wish I had managed this to start with, instead of letting everything…”

“Stop talking.” Tracy dragged his head down. “Just. Stop. Talking.”

She had finally gotten the courage to do this and she wasn’t going to waste it by talking. Thomas made an approving noise as he kissed her again, his hand cupping her head. Tracy could feel the pins coming loose and her hair starting to slip free, but she didn’t care. She had gotten what she had wanted for a long time. Her hair wasn’t as important.

Not right now.

“What is going on here?”

Thomas broke the kiss so abruptly that Tracy was practically gasping air. His arms tightened around her, and then she saw Thomas glaring at someone over her head. Then Tracy heard the voice again, the one that made her heart sink. She looked over her shoulder and saw Arnold Foster storming up onto the porch, a look of fury on his face. A horse was tethered to the well. They had been so engrossed in their embrace, neither of them had heard someone arriving. Everyone was here, and Foster was certainly not invited.

From the look of it, he had seen everything.

Foster stormed over to them, practically baring his teeth.

“What’s the meaning of this, Brooks?”

“It’s a kiss under the mistletoe, Mayor Foster.” Why did those words sting? But Thomas didn’t remove his arms from Tracy. “We’re consenting adults.”

“Consenting?” Foster snorted rudely. “It didn’t look like just a kiss from what I saw.”

Why was he even here? Had he actually seen them? Tracy wanted to go back inside. Thomas fixed Foster with a hard stare.

“I didn’t realize you were invited here, sir. Your sons said you weren’t going to be a guest. They wanted it to be a happy occasion.”

“I saw Morgan driving past with Tracy on board earlier. I knew then she wouldn’t be coming over to my home tonight.” Foster looked at Tracy with disappointment in his eyes. “I’m here to take her. Now, you take your hands off my woman.”

Anger flared inside Tracy. Foster was treating her like a piece of property and she was not having it.
